Late-Race Spin Nets 17th Place Finish For Delaney At Adirondack
“We had a good car, but a bunch of things went wrong tonight. You have those nights. It was the worst race I’ve ever been in. It wasn’t even fun. I talked to a lot of the other drivers and they said the same thing,” Delaney said. Delaney started 18th after posting a lap of 105.988 mph in qualifying earlier in the day – giving him a mid-pack starting position. Still, the driver was optimistic. The team, led by crew chief Jamie Aube, was consistent in both practice and qualifying and had set the car up for the long run. At Adirondack, where there’s no straightaway, faster is not always better. Delaney maintained his position through the first half of the race, but had to go into survival mode to do it. Aggressive driving was the order of the day, and Delaney was determined to come out of the race with a car in one piece. By the lap 100 mark, Delaney was on his way to the front, and had made it up to 13th when he spun on lap 110. “The car was good – we were fine all day with the set-up,” said Delaney. “We just kept getting in those little things all day and the car just kept going away, going away.” Delaney was determined to salvage a decent finish and kept plugging away, but again he was confronted with an obstacle at lap 144 when he spun in turn two. Delaney only had to make it through one more run – a three lap dash to the checkers. On the final circuit, Delaney got caught up in a multi-car pileup in turn four but still made it to the start/finish line to finish on the lead lap. “We dumped all the oil out of it so we’re lucky to have finished at all,” said Delaney. “I’m happy to put this race behind us and move on to Lime Rock in a couple of weeks.” For more information on Dustin Delaney, visit www.dustindelaney.com. |
