Promising Run Cut Short For Hayes At Adirondack
“When you have a good handling car Adirondack can be a really good place. If you are going around in a circle and your car is tight you are going to be miserable all night,” said the driver of the #52 J.L. Hendrick Chevrolet. “The guys worked really hard on this car all day long and never gave up.” Hayes was 17th quickest in practice and backed it up with a qualifying effort of 106.138 mph in qualifying. The speed was good enough to earn a 16th place starting position in the field. Only 18 laps were completed in the race when heavy rains began to fall and NASCAR red flagged the race. During the hour break, Hayes and his crew chief decided the best option for a solid run would be to come down pit road for a chassis adjustment. Hayes did just that as soon as the red flag was lifted. “That was the first of several pit stops,” said Hayes. “With all the cautions in this race we had a lot of opportunities to come in and adjust. After lap 100, we decided that was it. The guys did everything they could to make the car better. It was up to me to bring it up through the field.” Hayes was well on his way to doing just that. He made it up to 11th by a lap 148 restart and was confident to end the day with a top-10 finish. When the green dropped, Hayes got in a battle with Jeff Anton and, on the final lap of the race; contact was made in the last corner. Hayes was unable to finish and completed the race one lap down in 22nd. “At the beginning we pitted about four or five times and finally freed it up enough where it would turn and roll a little bit. We made it to where it was a little loose off. We had a track bar adjustment where we fixed that and had a pretty okay car after that. There was some dicing going on after that and Anton and I got together. The rest is history,” said Hayes. “It’s disappointing because I don’t want to tear up these cars. We had a top-10 run going and it all ended in a split second. We’ll just move on to Lime Rock and try to turn our luck around there.” For more information on Jamie Hayes or Ken Schrader Racing, visit www.schraderracing.com. |
