Frustrated Delaney Finishes 22nd At Lime Rock Park

Lakeville, CT (August 17, 2008): Dustin Delaney posted a 22nd place finish in the NASCAR Camping World Series East’s Mohegan Sun 200 at Lime Rock Park Saturday, and broke a six-race streak of top-20 finishes. The driver of the No. 39 Delaney Infrastructure Chevrolet admitted to feeling frustrated with the finish that was a result of some late-race contact.

“It’s frustrating,” admitted Delaney. “The guys worked so hard on this team and we had a better car than this finish shows.”

The entire weekend seemed to be a struggle as the team was forced to make an engine change after the first practice session. The team worked through the second practice session to get the job complete. It put Delaney in the position to have to battle plenty of traffic after he started 15th in the 32-car field.

“The belt fell off the oil pump so that engine was gone. We didn’t get any practice because we spent all day getting that thing changed over,” he explained. “Then qualifying got rained out so we had to start mid-pack. It seemed nothing was going our way.”

Delaney was running 17th when the first caution flew at lap 10. Once NASCAR opened pit road, crew chief Jamie Aube summoned the young, rookie driver down pit road for a fuel stop. Delaney returned to the track in 20th – the sixth car behind eventual race-winner Matt Kobyluck, who had led the procession down pit road.

“We were really happy with our pit stop and where we were when the race started back up,” said Delaney. “We were in a good position.”

Delaney made it up to 18th by lap 38 when NASCAR brought out the red flag for rain. During the delay, NASCAR and Goodyear inspected some of the teams tires and found a slit in one on Delaney’s #39 machine.

“The left front tire, they said, had a slit in it,” explained Delaney. “We had to come in and change that and that put us in the back where all the wrecks inevitably happen.”

NASCAR lifted the red flag conditions 75 minutes later and Delaney fulfilled their request to get the tire change. As anticipated, the pit stop put him at the rear of the field for the final 31 laps.

Delaney worked his way from the tail within sights of a top-15 finish, but a last lap spin relegated the Mayfield, N.Y. native to 22nd.

“We got up in a couple of things,” said Delaney. “The car was good before the red flag and we were running good with some of the guys up there. I knew we had a chance to at least come around for a top-15. On the last lap, I was racing for position, got a tire dropped into the dirt and got spun around.”
