Carmichael Comes From Behind, Twice, To Post Top-10 Finish At Mansfield

Mansfield, OH (August 24, 2008): Ricky Carmichael pulled off an impressive eighth place finish in Saturday’s Mansfield 150, the NASCAR Camping World Series East’s portion of Mansfield Motorsports Park’s doubleheader weekend with the Whelen Modified Tour. Carmichael’s finish came as the result of coming from the tail end of the field not once, but twice. It was his sixth top-10 finish of the season and leaves the Ken Schrader Racing team seventh in the championship point standings with only three races remaining.

“I missed the driver intros so they sent me to the back for the start,” explained Carmichael. “They had a revised schedule and I missed it. Shame on me. It’s my job to know.”

Carmichael gave up a 13th place starting position when he dropped to the rear, but the Clearwater, Florida native was confident the #4 Monster Energy Drink Chevrolet would be strong enough for the charge. Using a patient, yet aggressive driving style, Carmichael made it to the top-10 by lap 65.

After making it to seventh, Carmichael spun in turns three and four on lap 75 bringing out the caution flag. Though there was no damage to the Monster Energy Drink Chevrolet, he would have to go to the tail end once again.

“I spun out all by myself. I had too much rear brake in the car,” Carmichael explained. “I worked so hard and had to go to the back again. All we could do was drive to the front again.”

Racing resumed at lap 80 and by lap 125, Carmichael was sitting just outside the top-10 in eleventh place. Three caution periods cost the team valuable race time, but a final charge on a lap 150 restart netted the former Supercross Champion an eighth place finish.

“We were faster consistently in practice and qualifying at the beginning of the season. We haven’t made much progress and a lot of guys have,” said Carmichael about his season up to this point. “We’re working really hard to come from the back. We just need to get those better starting positions.”

An enhanced replay of the Mansfield 150 will be broadcast on SPEED on September 12th at 1 PM ET.
